Tony GreenAttorney General Hardy Myers today released the following statement in response to Judge Robert Jones' opinion issued today in Oregon v. Ashcroft (physician-assisted suicide):
"The court's ruling confirms our belief that the federal government does not have the authority to regulate the practice of medicine in Oregon. Today's decision preserves the will of Oregon voters."
"We will continue to defend Oregon's law even if the federal government appeals. During any appeal, Judge Jones' decision would prevent the federal government from taking law enforcement action against a physician or pharmacist lawfully assisting terminally-ill patients in ending their lives."
