Tony GreenAttorney General Hardy Myers will join food safety advocates to express opposition to federal legislation, S .3128, "The National Uniformity for Food Act," at a press conference scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2006, in Portland. Myers and representatives of the Oregon Chapter of Physicians for Social Responsibility, the National Environmental Trust, and local organic farmers will discuss their concerns about pending federal legislation that would preempt state and local food labeling and safety regulations.
"As Attorney General, my job is to protect the health and safety of Oregon consumers," stated Myers. "Legislation that purports to enhance food safety labeling requirements but in actuality weakens the tough standards Oregonians expect is bad public policy. Thirty-six other state Attorneys General join me in my opposition to these attempts to roll-back reasonable consumer warnings about chemicals, additives and nutrition information in our food," added Myers.
Thursday's press conference will be held at the Portland Farmer's Market, located at the Ecotrust Center in the Pearl District of Portland, at the corners of NW 10th and Irving Avenues.
